Christmas tree wars

We have Christmas tree issues in our house! This is one area when me and my husband do not see eye to eye.

I love, love, love a theme to our Christmas decorations. I tend to think of an idea early in the year so I can keep an eye out for bits that fit the look that I’m going for. Last year I had a board on Pinterest where I collect pictures for inspiration. I love to make things and usually make some or all of the decorations.

Last year I went for bright neon colours. I bought a pompom maker in the summer and made coloured pompoms while watching the TV. The stars are made from bright wrapping paper. Sofia and I made the snowflakes with Hama beads. The tree turned out exactly how I wanted it to. It was really colourful in a modern funky way.  I wish I had a better quality photo to show it in it’s full glory.  Neon bright Christmas tree

In a previous year I made hand painted wooden decorations and matched them with red and white paper chains. It took me a couple of weeks to make the bits and pieces that I wanted. Rolando’s verdict was that there was not enough colour.

Here’s the problem. Rolando is totally not with me on this. To put it kindly he goes for an eclectic look. To put it less kindly his approach is to grab any decorations he can get his hands on and mixes them all together. Everything will clash. There will be lots and lots of tinsel. He knows that I don’t like it so it makes him go for it even more.  This one of Rolando’s tamer creations (again not the best quality photo)!

This used to lead to our annual festive “how should we decorate the tree” argument. Every year we would disagree about what was or wasn’t going on the Christmas tree. This really wasn’t conducive to having a nice family activity of doing the tree.

To keep the peace we have reached a compromise. We now take it in turns to have creative control of the tree. Rolando gets to do his thing one year (odd numbered years) and I get to do the next year (even numbered years). We try and recruit the kids to our decorating sides “team tinsel” and “team tasteful.” At least ever other year I get to have a Christmas tree I really like.

I’m looking forward to doing the tree this weekend even though it is Rolando’s year. I can’t lie in the back of my mind I’ll be coming up with my 2016 ideas – I’m thinking a birds and butterflies theme!

  1. Haha, team tinsel vs team tasteful – that’s classic! I love your idea of birds and butterflies for a theme. This is the first year we’ve had a tree to decorate, we normally have Christmas day with family but this is the first year we have a toddler on board so we’re making a bit of an effort. We’ve got the tree up today, we’ll see if we have any decorating wars over the remainder of the weekend 🙂
