Finding Dory Review

I was so excited when I heard they were making Finding Dory! We are obsessed with Finding Nemo in our house. It is our go to rainy day film. I especially love the character of Dory the forgetful blue fish. I often find myself repeating her catch phrase “just keep swimming!” However I was a bit worried that they couldn’t pull off a sequel. I was nervous that they were going to mess it up! I also wasn’t sure how another search storyline could work.

Finding Dory Review

What’s it about?
The premise of Finding Dory is simple. It is set one year on from Dory, Marlon and Nemo’s original adventure. Dory, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, sets out to find her long lost family.  If you love Finding Nemo I’ll put money on you loving Finding Dory. I am very relieved, to say that it totally measures up to the original.

A lot of familiar characters are back. Alongside Dory are Marlon and Nemo. I was really happy when the surfer dude turtles and the singing sting ray popped up too. There are some great new characters in the mix. There is Destiny the whale shark and Bailey the beluga whale. The legend that is Idris Elba pops up briefly as a sea lion. There are also a group of gorgeous otters.

Hank the Octopus
Hank the Octopus is a big part of the action. What a cool character! He is a bit of a grumpy type which stops the film being too sickly sweet. He looks fantastic. I’m so impressed by the complex animation that must has gone into making Hank move and constantly change colour.

There are lots of flashbacks to Dory’s childhood showing little snippets of her past. I defy you not to melt at the pure cuteness of tiny Dory. I don’t want to give away what is going to happen. All I’ll say is that the film isn’t an epic journey like Finding Nemo. Even so there is still lots of action and some good plot twists. There is one point that is guaranteed to give you a tear in your eye. Who am I kidding I was reaching for the tissues! The running time is 97 minutes but it didn’t feel long at all.

Among all of sea creatures this film is brimming with human emotions, a signature of the best Pixar films. There is the power of friendship and loyalty; Marlon and Dory are repaying Dory for her help in the first movie. Dory’s quest is about perseverance and hope against the odds. This fish is just not going to give up! There film also doesn’t shy away from darker themes of loss and longing (hence the need for tissues!)

Looking beautiful
The film looks visually stunning. I especially love the colourful reef in the opening scenes. We saw the 2D version rather than the 3D version. I didn’t think my 3 year olds would keep the glasses on. I imagine the film would look fantastic in 3D.

Is it suitable for young children?
I think this film is really well suited to younger children. My 3 year old twins and 7 year old daughter all really loved it. There is nothing too scary that would freak out younger children. If you want to be sure if it is suitable for your kids you could always watch Finding Nemo before hand.

Finding dory day out

Don’t leave early!
Make sure that you stay until right after the end credits have run. There is a little extra scene to enjoy. Most of the audience left too early and missed it!

Overall verdict
Overall I would give this film 9 stars out of 10. It completely stands up to the original. The kids and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
